  • How we used to hear

These days I think I'd rather see Hugh Grant laying prostrate under my front bumper than on the silver screen. I am little tired of seeing his smug floppy haired features prefacing acres of undeserved newsprint, I am not the slightest bit interested in finding out more about what he and Jemima have been up to. I also believe that everyone involved in that excrescence 'Love Actually,' should be hunted down and made to pay for what they did (with the possible exceptions of Laura Linney, Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson.)I have however recently spent a couple of hours enjoying the guilty pleasure that was 'Music& Lyrics.' This film delivered a pitch perfect pastiche of the sort of music that I wouldn't have been caught dead listening to in the 80's, but have since had to endure in a multitude of pubs, bars and night clubs. I do feel that I could quite happily be talked into committing an act of violence if I have to listen to hear 'Careless Whisper' even once more.Music like the right smell though can be hideously evocative, the right cords taking right back to a special moment in time, either good or bad. 80's music for me can be especially like that. The 80's were in many respects a special decade (much like some people require special education.) Overblown& vulgar an over reaction to all the dreary austerities of the 70's and the early parts of the 80's themselves. It was a time when Dallas and Dynasty ruled the prime time slots, when all credit cards were gold (and not the devalued type you get these days,) and women seemed like they were about to evolve a bigger more powerful shoulderr. It was of course the first decade I spent anytime legally as an adult, personally I don't think that I've grown up yet, and your most important interest was the sort of music that you listened to.Even today when you first arrive college, you'll probably be asked the same three questions, what are you studying, where are you from and what 'A' levels did you get. Back in the heady days of the 80's though the next question would undoubtedly have been, 'So what sort of music do you listen to.' This was the defining facet of your personality. If you admited a liking for any of the then popular bands, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet or even worse Aha you would have been literally laughed out of school. The only cool bands were ones that nobody had every heard of, and of course you never hear about them now.Of course you could get away with an interest in something a bit older, say like Pink Floyd or Led Zeppilin, but any of the bubblegum sounds of the time would be treated with derision. Of course it's the bubblegum that's endured whilst many of the serious sounds have been consigned to the 8 track of history.Musical snobbery is a transient thing. I think I shall now key up 'We buily this city on rock and roll.'
